When hiring for Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Drafters, New Zealand engineering firms are looking for high-calibre candidates who hold a relevant tertiary qualification, such as a Diploma in Computer-Aided Design, Architectural Draughting or Architectural Design. To improve their appeal within the Engineering market, some candidates expand their education by completing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies or a Master of Architecture, however many crucial skills are taught on the job.
The daily responsibilities of a CAD Drafter can largely depend on what area of engineering they specialise in, such as a Civil, Mechanical or Construction. However, most will conduct some, if not all, of the following:
Following several years of experience, CAD Drafters can have numerous career opportunities ahead of them. These include becoming a more senior technician, leading a CAD team or moving into Architectural Design. In the latter case, most candidates would need to complete a Master of Architecture to become a Registered Architect. Alternatively, experienced senior CAD Drafters can also move into Construction Management later in their careers.
