Environmental Planner Jobs

An Environmental Planner in Australia is responsible for providing expert advice on land use planning with a focus on environmental sustainability, assessing potential environmental impacts of development projects, and guiding the implementation of policies and strategies to protect the natural environment, often working closely with government agencies and stakeholders to achieve positive environmental outcomes within planning projects. 


Key responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting environmental impact assessments for proposed developments, identifying potential ecological, air quality, and water quality impacts, and recommending mitigation strategies. 
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of environmental planning policies at local and state levels, including sustainability strategies and climate change adaptation plans. 
  • Providing technical expertise on environmental planning issues to other planners, developers, and government departments. 
  • Leading environmental planning aspects of development projects, including stakeholder engagement, data analysis, report writing, and approvals processes. 
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant environmental legislation and regulations throughout the planning process. 
  • Interpreting environmental data to inform planning decisions and assess the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. 
  • Facilitating community consultations and workshops to incorporate local environmental concerns into planning decisions. 


Required skills and qualifications:

  • A degree in environmental science, environmental planning, geography, or a related field. 
  • Understanding of land use planning principles and processes, including relevant Australian planning legislation. 
  • Strong knowledge of environmental issues, ecosystems, and potential environmental impacts of development. 
  • Proficiency in GIS software, data analysis, and report writing. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex technical information to stakeholders. 
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, developers, and government officials.
