How to Enter

The role of a Cathodic Protection (CP) Technician can be complicated. So, many New Zealand employers prioritise candidates who hold a relevant engineering degree that specialises in Civil or Chemical Engineering when recruiting CP Technicians. Alternatively, significant industry experience can make up for a gap in education. However, possessing a post-graduate degree in CP or Corrosion Engineering can greatly increase your chances of securing a role.

Typical Responsibilities

The day-to-day job responsibilities of a CP Technician can include some or all of the following:

• Designing, refining and implementing corrosion management control strategies and processes
• Researching new effective applications and specialist technologies for innovative corrosion protection
• Providing recommendations to existing corrosion management control strategies where appropriate
• Working with Management to ensure all work completed adheres to safety, corrosion prevention and regulatory standards
• Conducting CP surveys onsite
• Delivering periodic reports of corrosion status of systems, buildings and equipment using CP survey data
• Managing and training CP personnel

Progression

After gaining experience, many CP Technicians can go on to become more senior in Cathodic Protection. However, other options include moving into similar areas such as Inspection Engineering or Health & Safety.

Salary Range

52K – 100K per annum (NZD)
