​How to Enter

To enter a Transport Modeller job in New Zealand, we recommend that you first complete a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, specialising in Civil Engineering – Roading and Transportation, or a Bachelor of Engineering, specialising in Traffic Planning and Highway Design.

Typical Responsibilities

The daily job responsibilities of a Transport Modeller can include the following:

• Reviewing plans for commercial or residential developments and their potential impact of transportation networks
• Using computer simulation programs with real-time data on population, traffic volume and peak congestion hours to explore potential impact of proposed development projects
• Running simulations to identify the impact of changing traffic light timings and intersection layouts
• Running simulations for potential traffic and natural disasters, such as earthquakes
• Using simulation data to create reports of the potential impact proposed developments may have on transportation networks and congesting
• Creating reports on how to best to avoid adverse effects and maximise benefits for transport networks

Progression

The next logical step for many Transport Modellers is to specialise further in Transportation Management and continue progressing their careers in Civil Infrastructure. However, this also opens the door to many other areas of Civil Engineering, including Urban Planning and Surveying.

Salary Range

40K – 95K per annum (NZD)
